Step 2: Announce, âI need a volunteer from the audience. The volunteer should draw with his or her right hand and be comfortable wearing a blindfold for a few minutes.â If no one comes forward quickly to help you, simply ask someone in the front row who meets your two criteria to join you in front of the audience. Give this first volunteer a marker. Tell the audience this person represents the Administrator. Hand him or her the appropriate name badge.
Say, âThere will be three trials. At the beginning of each trial you will hold this pen in your right hand in contact with the surface on the dot in the middle of the large circle. Then I will indicate a target point on the circle. When I say âGo,â your goal is to move the tip of your marker from the middle point to the target as quickly as you can, stopping only when the point of your marker is precisely in the center of the target. I will tell you when to stop. Keep your marker in contact with the surface during each trial, so that everyone can see the path you took from the middle point to the target.â
Explain that this exercise is a metaphor for climate change: âThe starting point in the center of the circle is the GHG level that exists today. The target that I will draw each time at some point on the outer circle is a level of GHG that would give sustainability. The time elapsing as the Administratorâs pen passes from the center of the circle to reach the target is the time society experiences troubles before it achieves climate sustainability. Of course if the Administrator overshoots the target, we will experience chaos.
âObviously, we want to be finished with the troubles as quickly as possible. Thus, I ask you to move from start to target as fast as you can. I will ask a member of the audience to time you during each of the three trials, and the chart will indicate your performance.â
Step 3: Identify someone in the audience who has a watch with a second hand and ask that person to assist you by measuring the length of time required by the Administrator to reach the goal in each of the three trials. Designate your first target by drawing a small ½-inch (1.25 cm) circle somewhere on the line that forms the large circle. Then say, âGo!â In this first trial the Administrator should be able to move the pen quickly and directly from the starting point to the center of the target. When the pen is resting completely within the small target circle, say âStop!â Ask the timer to announce the length of time it took. Label the line 1, and write down next to the line in the middle of the circle the time that was required to move from the center to the target.
Step 4: Ask a second member of the audience to come up, someone who is right-handed and who will eventually be comfortable wearing a blindfold.
